Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka have all been subjected to torrents of vile racist abuse after they failed to score during England’s penalty shootout against Italy last night.

After drawing 1-1 during the match and extra time, the Euros finalists took part in a tense penalty shootout, which eventually saw Italy come out as champions after beating England 3-2.

It was a painstakingly close call and, despite the nation’s disappointment, the majority of Brits have been applauding the England squad and their valiant efforts to get the country into the final of a major tournament for the first time since 1966.

However, as is the case all too often these days, certain players were also subject to horrendous abuse.

Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka all missed their penalties during the tense shootout and, as a result, were flooded with abuse and vile racist remarks by internet trolls. The mural of Marcus Rashford in Withington was also vandalised in the hour following England’s defeat.

The FA were forced to speak out and condemn the abuse, saying they will do ‘all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.’

The Metropolitan Police also condemned the ‘unacceptable’ abuse, adding it will be investigating the ‘offensive and racist’ social media posts.

The force said in a statement on Twitter: “We are aware of a number of offensive and racist social media comments being directed towards footballers following the #Euro2020 final.

“This abuse is totally unacceptable, it will not be tolerated and it will be investigated.”

Italy were crowned European champions in the Euros 2020 final last night after defeating England in the penalty shootouts following a 1-1 draw and extra time.
