Northern Quarter streets to be permanently pedestrianised, council confirms

Manchester City Council has confirmed that the current temporary pedestrianisation of some Northern Quarter streets is set to become permanent.

It’s good news for locals as well as visitors, as the Thomas Street pedestrian zone is set to become a permanent addition to the Northern Quarter. 

Throughout 2020 a number of roads were closed to traffic to allow for more room for social distancing. It saw many bars open up outdoor seating to allow for more Covid-safe dining areas.  

The council has now confirmed some of these temporary changes will remain in place due to the ‘broadly positive’ feedback they have received.

The new measures are thought to set back the council £2.3 million and will include better features for cyclists, including cycle stands towards the Piccadilly Station ramp as well as a widened footpath on Dale Street and new trees! 

A one-way restriction is also set to be put in place on Tariff Street. 

A pamphlet issued to residents reads: “Our plans will make Manchester’s brilliant Northern Quarter streets even more dynamic, lovely to look at and pleasant to use.

“It will be safer, greener and better for everyone – especially for those enjoying this unique quarter of our city as it should be enjoyed: on foot or by bike – as well as other transport users.”
