A man and woman have been each issued with a £10,000 fine for failing to quarantine after returning to the UK from Dubai.

Dubai is currently on the red list of 33 countries and deemed high risk for those arriving in England from the country.

The duo from the Wirral took multiple flights on their way home in an attempt to avoid having to isolate but were ultimately tracked and later fined.

Chief Inspector Chris Barnes called their actions ‘selfish and inconsiderate’.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson explained that officers received a report last Tuesday that the pair had failed to quarantine.

Following an investigation, the man and woman were visited at their home and fined. They were then transported to a quarantine hotel.

Ch Insp Barnes added: “Strict rules around international travel have been put in place by the government for a reason, and to disregard them in this way is selfish, inconsiderate, and potentially dangerous.”

The police force added that travel regulation breaches will always be ‘dealt with robustly’.

Currently, the regulations which require all arrivals from high-risk countries to self-isolate for ten days aim to stop the spread of Covid-19 variants.
