What a brilliant idea

A new community is opening in Manchester to provide wrap-around support for the city’s homeless and vulnerable men.

Embassy Village will be a new safe environment to help vulnerable people get back on their feet through the provision of safe and secure homes.

There will be 40 new high-quality permanent module homes created through repurposing shipping containers, each with their own front door.

There will also be a village hall which will become a community hub, and training and mentoring facility for residents.

Embassy Village will operate as a housing provider rather than a shelter and will interview all potential residents. Only those who are ready and keen to work will be offered accommodation.

The team will provide wrap-around support and work with residents – who they estimate will live on-site for an average of six months – to equip them with invaluable life skills, from budgeting to money management and laundry.

The village is set to have a zero-tolerance of drug and alcohol consumption as well as strict rules on noise minimisation after hours. Residents will also not be allowed to receive visitors to ensure cleanliness across the site.

The project is supported by Peel Land and Property Ltd (Peel L&P) and CAPITAL&CENTRIC.

Tim Heatley of Capital & Centric, said: “This is the power of collaboration, innovative re-use of derelict railway arches + creative re-use of shipping containers + generous support from lots of Greater Manchester businesses and people = 40 studio apartments for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness.”

Embassy Village will be located in the railway arches in Castlefield where entry will only be possible by a ramp from the ring road path.

There will be excellent pedestrian and cycle access to the city centre to enable easy access to supporting services and employment opportunities.

A planning application is set to be submitted in early spring this year with construction hopefully starting in late summer and the first homes opening by the end of the year.
