A man has been arrested after driving a bus along tram tracks in Greater Manchester.

Greater Manchester Police released an image of the bus sitting on the Metrolink line in Wythenshawe earlier this morning, Thursday March 16th. The driver of the vehicle was subsequently arrested on suspicion of various different offences.

GMP Traffic Officers posted a picture of the bus travelling along the tracks on its official Twitter account in the early hours of this morning. The post alleged that the driver was unfit to be in charge of the vehicle ‘through drink/drugs’.

Officers said blood samples had been taken from the driver after he was detained.

Posting at 4.31am, GMP wrote in the tweet: “The wheels on this bus no longer go round and round! The driver was so unfit through drink/drugs that he thought his bus was a tram and decided to drive along the tram tracks!

“Driver #arrested for several [suspected] offences and blood samples taken! @GMPWythenshaw.”

Anyone convicted of drug driving will receive a minimum one-year driving ban, an unlimited fine, up to six months in prison and a criminal record. The penalty for causing death by dangerous driving under the influence of drugs is a prison sentence of up to 14 years.
