On Wednesday evening the much-loved  ‘…And on the sixth day, God created Manchester’ mosaic was vandalised.

The piece is located on the side of Affleck’s in the Northern Quarter, and was created by renowned local artist Mark Kennedy.

It was sprayed with bright pink paint, covering the bottom of the mosaic and obscuring the word Manchester.

The vandal also sprayed the word ‘banksey’ on the bottom, and in video taken at the scene he can be seen claiming he knows the world famous street artist.

In the footage, he’s challenged by passers-by and claims to know Banksy, before becoming aggressive.

In some good news, the person in question has now been arrested by the police.

The GMP city centre Twitter account wrote last night: “PC Costello with a great arrest this evening, following reports of graffiti on the iconic @affleckspalace ‘On the Sixth Day God created Manchester mosaic’ a 43 year old male arrested after being literally #caughtredhanded at the scene of the crime”.

Hopefully the mosaic is restored to its original glory soon!
