Lidl has become the best paying supermarket in the UK with its new hourly rate for staff.

The discount store is increasing pay rates for new shop floor workers to more than £10 an hour, the Mirror reports.

According to bosses, entry-level wages will increase from £9.50 to £10.10 an hour for staff working outside of London from March 2022 – it’ll go from £10.85 to £11.30 in the capital.

Workers who’ve been there longer will also see a pay rise, with it increasing to £11.40 outside London and £12.25 inside – depending on length of service.

The move means some of the 21,000 Lidl staff will see a pay rise of more than 6%, with those over the age of 23 benefiting from a wage which is 60p per hour more than the National Living Wage.

Lidl says the increase means the supermarket chain is now the highest-paying in the UK, adding that they’re raising wages to say thanks to staff for their hard work during the pandemic.

Lidl chief executive Christian Härtnagel said. “At Lidl, our frontline colleagues are the backbone of our business.

“They have worked tirelessly over the past 18 months of the Covid-19 crisis and are integral to our future success.

“We have ambitious plans to grow our business across Great Britain, and to do that we need to ensure we attract and look after the best talent at every level of our business.

“This year we feel incredibly lucky to be in a position as a business to go even further by making this significant investment in our incredible workforce, which will make us the best paying supermarket in the UK.”
