King Charles makes William and Kate Prince and Princess of Wales in first speech as monarch
The King also paid tribute to his ‘beloved’ mother
King Charles III has paid tribute to HM The Queen in his first national address as monarch.
Speaking of his ‘profound sorrow’, the King said of his mother: “Throughout her life, HM the Queen, my beloved mother, was an inspiration and example to me and to all my family.
“We owe her the most heartfelt debt any family could owe to their mother, for her love, affection, guidance and example.”
Sitting next to a photograph of the Queen and wearing a black suit and tie, he said his mother ‘made sacrifices for duty’, adding that the ‘affection, admiration and respect’ the Queen inspired ‘became the hallmark of her reign’.
The King also paid tribute to his ‘darling wife Camilla’, confirming she has become his Queen Consort.
He said: “I know she will bring to the demands of her new role the steadfast devotion to duty which I have come to rely on so much.”
And speaking of his son and now heir to the throne, King Charles revealed that William is now the Prince of Wales.
He said: “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the centre ground where vital help can be given.”
He continued to pledge himself to his new role, saying: “As the Queen herself did with such unswerving devotion, I too now solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God grants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of our nation.”
The King and his Queen Consort Camilla returned to London from Balmoral this afternoon, where they were greeted by crowds of royalists and well-wishers.
Queen Elizabeth passed away at the age of ninety-six at Balmoral Castle yesterday (September 8th), bringing to an end her historical seventy-year reign on the throne.
A period of national mourning officially began today, and will be observed until seven days after Her Majesty’s funeral, the date of which is yet to be announced.
