There is currently a huge emergency presence in Rochdale town centre after a body was pulled from the river.

Emergency crews, including police, paramedics and the fire service, were called to the scene at St Mary’s Gate, in Rochdale town centre, after a member of the public spotted what appeared to be a body floating in the river while they waited at traffic lights.

Sadly, crews pulled a body from the River Roch shortly after 6.30am this morning — Wednesday June 28th — with a huge police presence remaining at the scene.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police has confirmed a body was pulled from the water.

No further details about the person have been confirmed at this point.

St Mary’s Gate was quickly shut both ways between Dane Street and College Road causing traffic congestion in surrounding areas while police have been investigating. However, TfGM have recently posted that the roads are now open again.

Forensic officers can be seen working in the area and a tent has been erected. No further details have been given at this point in time. Updates to follow.
