A 36-year-old nurse who was fighting for her life after contracting coronavirus has sadly died.

The ‘fit and healthy’ NHS worker had no underlying health conditions, but was placed on a ventilator after being struck by the virus, according to her family.

When Areema Nasreen was hospitalised last month, her sister gave a warning that people need to take this seriously, saying it’s ‘not just the elderly at risk’.

Areema is the youngest NHS worker to be tragically killed after contracting coronavirus.

Her friend Rubi Aktar took to Facebook to pay tribute: “She was the most loveliest, genuine person you could ever meet, she went above and beyond for everyone she met. I’m so grateful that I had the honour to call her my best friend, she saw me at my best and my worst and accepted my every flaw.

“I am so broken that words can’t explain. I can’t believe I will not see your smile again. You made me the nurse that I am today, with your support, motivation and inspiration I am the nurse that I am today and I hope I can do you proud Areema.

“I love you so much and I will never forget you. You had so much to live for, I am sorry you didn’t get to see your kids grow up and I’m sorry that you didn’t get to complete your career”.

Areema developed several of the symptoms, including a high temperature, body aches and a cough, and was diagnosed as having COVID-19 – she was then put on a ventilator at Walsall Manor Hospital around March 22nd.

Her sister, Kazeema, told Birmingham Live at the time: “My sister who is an amazing nurse on the front line and who always helps so many has now caught this virus. She is critically ill in ICU, on a ventilator and fighting for her life.

“I want everyone to know how dangerous this is. My sister is only 36 and is normally fit and healthy.”

She added: “People are not taking this seriously enough. She is young – it is not just the elderly who are at risk.

RIP Areema, and thank you for everything you did for this country.
