Dave Myers from the Hairy Bikers has revealed how a special diet helped him battle cancer.

The TV chef and one half of the Hairy Bikers is now back filming the show alongside co-star and friend Si King, much to fans’ delight.

Dave, 65, fought back after chemotherapy treatment saw him lose his usually healthy appetite. He has now shared that he has been eating a rather unusual diet of sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs — helping him gain strength while on the road to recovery.

Consuming the so-called ‘good bacteria’ in kimchi — a traditional Korean banchan made from fermented cabbage — has been credited with helping people maintain a healthy digestion, and sauerkraut, which contains lots of fibre, has also been beneficial.

Dave, 65, said: “It’s unbelievable to be back. Every breath I take now is just refreshing and fabulous. It varies really, what food I’ve been having. At some stage I need to put weight on but I need things to boost my immune system.

“So I’ve been eating a lot of sauerkraut. It really works for me – sauerkraut, kimchi and meatballs. I live by it. It’s a probiotic and good for the immune system and keeps you regular. I love it. It’s the healthy eating that does it.”

The biker turned chef has previously spoken of how the gruelling treatment put him off eating food and caused him to lose weight, despite describing himself as a ‘glutton’.

He’s now glad to be back doing what he does best and working alongside his pal Si. Dave said: “We got back filming this week, a new TV series, and it is a huge step back to normality and winning an award.

“I got diagnosed last March so it’s been over a year. It’s a work in progress, and it’s all going the right way. I’m getting there and I’m back on the bike.”
