Boris Johnson has confirmed that Greater Manchester will move to tier 3 from 00:01am Friday 23rd.
The new Covid alert levels were introduced to ensure the ‘right level of intervention in the right places’, working through the new framework with local authorities.
Greater Manchester will move to the ‘very high alert level’ as of midnight on Thursday 22nd.
The new rules will see the closure of casinos, bingo halls and soft play areas. Plus bars and pubs where substantial meals are not served at a table.
Boris Johnson said: “I know that these restrictions are tough, both on businesses and individuals.
“And believe me, no one wants to be putting these things into effect. But that is why we are putting in place a comprehensive package of support.”
Boris Johnson confirms he ‘regrets’ an agreement was not reached after ten days of negotiation with Greater Manchester leaders.
He said: “We made a generous offer to support Manchester’s business. The mayor didn’t accept it, unfortunately.
“Given the public health situation and I must proceed to move Greater Manchester into the highest alert level.”
He added that Greater Manchester will receive £20m only. But he says the government has spent £190bn on Covid already.
Boris has added that he is grateful for Burnham saying he will urge compliance with the rules.
Andy Burnham found out the news live on TV. He said: “It’s brutal to be honest”.
“This is now way the country in a crisis. It isn’t. This is not right. They should not be doing this – grinding people down, trying to accept the least they can get away with.
“£22m to fight the situation we are in is frankly disgraceful.”
