A horse has been rescued by Fire and Rescue crews after it fell into a steep ditch near Chester.

Firefighters from Powey Lane, Lymm and Bollington were called to a field off Seahill Road, near Saughall, on Tuesday afternoon.

The frightened animal was submerged in cold water where it became stuck.

After much hard work in darkness, crews were able to retrieve the 28-year-old mare, called Pia, from the ditch and pull her to safety.

The horse was checked over by a vet before being handed back to her owners, who say she is doing well.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service posted to Facebook about the incident, saying: “Firefighters from Powey Lane, Lymm and Bollington rescued a horse that was stuck in water in a ditch in Chester.

“28 year old mare Pia was checked over by a vet and handed back into the care of its owner and was doing well after her ordeal.”
