A teenager was stabbed following a fight at Victoria Station tram stop last night.
At around 9pm, reports of an alleged stabbing began trickling in on social media, with passerbys posting photos showing a large number of emergency services vehicles parked up outside the building.
Officers from both GMP and the British Transport Police arrived at the scene and quickly confirmed that a seventeen-year-old male had indeed been stabbed – but his injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
A cordon was erected around part of the station.
A GMP spokesperson said in a statement: “At around 21:08hrs on Wednesday 2nd June 2021, police were called to a report of a stabbing at Victoria station Tram stop.
“BTP and GMP Officers attended and established that a male aged seventeen had sustained stab wounds, his injuries are not life threatening.”
Shortly after the fight took place, Transport for Greater Manchester announced on their Twitter page that the Victoria Station Approach had been closed and that any further bus services would be diverted.
The incident also affected Metrolink tram services arriving and departing the station.
People were quick to react online, with one Twitter user writing: “Scary how many times it’s occurred right? Won’t stop it but I think a knife amnesty is needed, harsher sentences but more importantly huge investment in community services for the under 18’s. @AndyBurnhamGM is the man to push it I think.”
Another noted: “We’ve had 5 similar stories the last month. Time for @AndyBurnhamGM to take action.”
Any arrests relating to the stabbing are yet to be made.
