The England squad will be donating their Euro 2020 prize money to various charities and the NHS, it has been reported today.
The Football Association could receive around £24 million if England beat Italy at Wembley on Sunday night.
A portion of that fee – an estimated £9.6m – will be shared among Gareth Southgate’s twenty-six-man squad, but the players intend to donate their winnings to help the NHS.
Though the plan is yet to be finalised due to tax reasons, NHS charities are set to be handed a huge cash injection due to England’s success this summer.
A statement on behalf of the players before the tournament began read: “Following positive discussions with the FA, the England senior men’s squad are pleased to confirm that a significant donation from their international match fees will be made to NHS Charities Together via the #PlayersTogether initiative.
“This contribution will be taken from a fund already set aside to support a variety of worthy causes using all match fees collated since September 2018.”
