A double decker bus sliced the whole of its roof off after hitting a low bridge in Eccles, Greater Manchester.

The driver sheared the top off the blue Diamond bus after trying to pass under the bridge located on Barton Lane, Patricroft, on Monday evening, April 10th.

Greater Manchester Police sealed off the road after the smash, which happened at approximately 9.45pm, and saw the bus wedged under the bridge with the top deck exposed and the roof lay on the road behind it.

Seats on the top level were bent as the rear end of the large vehicle sat stuck underneath the low bridge which carries part of the Bridgewater Canal over Barton Lane, where it meets Barton Road.

A number of police vehicles were in attendance. It is unclear if there were any injuries caused by the incident at this time.

In a tweet shared by GMP Traffic, the force wrote: “Barton Lane, Eccles is currently closed both ways due to a bridge strike by a bus.

“The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can attend and assess / repair any damage. Please avoid and plan an alternative route as there may be subsequent local delays.”

The road will remain closed until the Ports Authority can assess and repair any damage to the bridge.

According to the BBC, in a statement Diamond Bus North West said that the ‘incident is under investigation’.
