Traffic was halted on the M62 today after a large group of cows wandered close to the road.

A section of the motorway saw traffic at a standstill this afternoon due to ‘cows in the road’, according to National Highways.

The organisation tweeted to say ‘a large number of cows had wandered close to the road’ at around 12pm.

The incident meant both sides of the motorway were blocked with long queues building, between junction 19 for Heywood and junction 20 for Rochdale.

Traffic officers and police were on the scene to deal with the cows.

National Highways posted to twitter about the incident, saying: “Traffic has been STOPPED in both directions on the M62 in Greater Manchester between J19 (Heywood) and J20 (Rochdale) to allow for Police and our Traffic Officers to deal with a large number of cows which have wandered close to the road.

“There’s a 30 minute delay both ways.”

National Highways gave an update to say the cows have now been moved on, saying: “The cows have now been moved to safety, and traffic has been released in both directions on the M62 in Greater Manchester between J19 (Heywood) and J20 (Rochdale).

“Severe delays remain both ways, but should now start to ease.”
