Captain Sir Tom Moore’s family are by his side in hospital as he battles Covid-19

Captain Sir Tom Moore was admitted to Bedford hospital on Sunday.
The 100-year-old, who raised more than £30m for the NHS, was taken to hospital on Sunday after testing positive for coronavirus, and it’s been confirmed his family are with him.
Captain Tom had been undergoing treatment for pneumonia but it is believed he has not been admitted to intensive care.
The hospital released a statement to say that his family members are with him.
The statement, released with agreement from his daughters, read: “Bedford Hospital continues to care for Captain Sir Tom Moore.
“At this time members of Captain Tom’s family are with him.
“We respectfully request that media give the family space and privacy and do not contact them directly so they can focus on their father, grandfather and father-in-law.”
Along with thousands of well wishes from the public, many politicians are also doing the same.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson tweeted on Sunday evening: “My thoughts are very much with @CaptainTomMoore and his family.
“You’ve inspired the whole nation, and I know we are all wishing you a full recovery.”
During questions in the House of Commons, defence secretary Ben Wallace said: “I’d like to take the opportunity on behalf of everyone in defence to send Captain Sir Tom Moore our best wishes for his recovery from Covid.
“He continues to be an inspiration to us all and embodying the trust, courage and team spirit – which is the motto of the Army Foundation College, in Harrogate, of which he is the honorary colonel.
“From the newest recruit upwards, we all wish him a very speedy recovery.”
Captain Tom’s family confirmed his illness on Sunday with a statement on his Twitter, which read: “He was at home with us until today when he needed additional help with his breathing.
“He is being treated in a ward although he is not in ICU.
“The medical care he has received in the last few weeks has been remarkable and we know that the wonderful staff at Bedford Hospital will do all they can to make him comfortable and hopefully return home as soon as possible.
“We understand that everyone will be wishing him well.
“We are of course focusing on my father and will update you when we are able to.”
A spokesperson for the family told the BBC Captain Tom had not yet had his Covid-19 vaccine due to the medication he was taking for pneumonia.
