An 11-year-old boy was pulled over by police after he was found to be driving a BMW along the M1 with a caravan in tow.
Officers were shocked to see the school-age boy driving along the motorway after he was pulled over for towing a suspected stolen caravan.
Police responded to reports of a stolen caravan from a holiday site near Thirsk, North Yorkshire, at around 3.30pm on Thursday, March 7th by someone driving a black BMW SUV.
Officers tracked down the vehicle – a BMW X5 – which was using false number plates, 45 minutes after they received the call.
It had driven South down the A1 and left at Hook Moor Interchange and was stopped after it changed onto the M1 near Garforth – where ‘stunned’ officers found the under-age driver behind the wheel.
Thankfully, no one was hurt during the incident, police said.
North Yorkshire Police have said the boy was taken in for questioning but has since been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.
A spokesperson said: “Thanks to the quick work of our skilled roads policing officers, our control room and intelligence team working in the background, the rightful owners have been updated that their caravan had been found.
“No-one was injured during the incident.”
Officers have advised owners of caravans to ensure they have security measures in place to help prevent the theft of their property. Some of the latest technology and devices include CCTV to watch over vehicles and driveways, where caravans may be kept.
