Today the Prime Minister has told all UK pubs, clubs, restaurants and other venues to close.

He addressed the nation this afternoon, saying that after tonight they should all close, except for takeaway options.

However, Boris Johnson warned that people should not go out tonight to socialise.

The chancellor also said that the government will step in to pay people’s wages, to cover any losses.

The Government will cover 80% of the salary of retained workers, up to £2,500 a month.

Every business will be eligible to join the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, which will distribute government grants to pay wages.

While it’ll be in place for three months initially, it may be extended.

Mr Sunak also told businesses that they’re ‘doing everything we can to support them’, adding: “The government is doing its best to stand behind you, I am asking you to do your best to stand behind workers”.

As for self-employed people, the chancellor said they are suspending the minimum income floor for Universal Credit, meaning anyone self-employed will be able to access Universal Credit at the same rate as Statutory Sick Pay for employees.
