Beaches could be closed if people continue to ignore social distancing, Matt Hancock warns

The government has warned it could close beaches if social distancing is not observed by visitors.

The warning comes as thousands flocked to Bournemouth beach on Thursday, causing a ‘major incident’ to be declared. 

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole council said services were ‘completely overstretched’ as a huge number of visitors attended the beach, defying advise to stay away.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock has said the government could close public areas like beaches if social distancing is not being observed.

Talking to TalkRadio about closing beaches he said: “Well, we do have that power. I am reluctant to use it because people have had a pretty tough lockdown.

“Everybody should be able to enjoy the sunshine. The key is to do it with respect. Stay with your households. Stay a good distance from other households.

“Outside is safer than inside. So, you have got to respect the rules. Respect the fact that social distancing is still important.

“We do have those powers – and if we see a spike in the number of cases, then we will take action.”
