Here’s everywhere you’ll have to wear a face mask now they are compulsory…

It is now compulsory to wear a face mask in most shops from today (July 24th) and you could be fined up to £100 if you do not wear one.

The government has implemented a new rule that requires people to wear face masks in shops to help stop the spread of coronavirus.

The Department for Health has also confirmed that face masks need to be worn when ordering and collecting takeaway food, for instance in McDonald’s, but you don’t need to wear one if you are dining in.

The guidance states: “It will be compulsory to wear a face covering when buying food and drink to takeaway from cafes and shops.

“If you are in a premises where you are able to sit down and consume food or drink that you have bought, then you can remove your face covering in order to eat and drink on site.”

Venues such as restaurants, pubs, gyms and hairdressers are exempt. However, further guidance has been issued and the rules now include banks, shopping centres, train stations and airports.

Masks can be taken off for the purpose of identification, for example at the Post Office, bank or shop.

Police have the power to issue a £100 fine if you are caught not wearing a mask where it is compulsory.

While supermarkets and shops can refuse entry to people who do not wear a mask the Association of Convenience Stores has advised shop assistants to not challenge customers who aren’t wearing a mask.

This comes after a 40% spike in violence against retail workers in lockdown.

Places you need to wear a mask from July 24th:

  • Shops
  • Supermarkets
  • Shopping Centres
  • Cafes and when buying takeaway food
  • Post Offices
  • Banks and building societies
  • Transport hubs (airports, train stations, ports, bus and coach stations and terminals)
  • On public transport (since June 15th)

The guidelines state to continue to socially distance by two-metres where possible, one metre where it is not, and to continue to practise good hand hygiene.
