All road closures and travel disruption as North West wakes up to heavy snow cover

Motorists should take extra care and commuters are told to check before you travel

As the region has woken up to a blanket of snow this morning, here are all your travel updates and road closures.

A yellow weather warning for snow and ice is in place across the North West as temperatures plummeted to below freezing overnight.

According to Met Office forecasters, ‘heavy snow’ could continue to fall from 7am this morning with showers expected to last until around 10am.

With the slippery conditions outside, motorists and commuters have been advised to take ‘extra care’ while travelling this morning.

The Bee Network has warned the wintery conditions ‘may lead to some travel disruption to transport and infrastructure’ and advise the public to check for updates on its website.

A number of roads are likely to be affected and users of public transport, including buses, trains and trams, are advised to allow themselves more time and prepare for longer journey times.

Service changes have been made on a number of Metrolink lines due to a cracked rail at Victoria. Trams are currently not running between Bury and Whitefield due to points issue.

Some schools have chosen to remain closed this morning due to the adverse weather conditions.

Philips High school in Bury, St Peter’s Catholic High School in Orrell and St Catharine’s C of E Primary School in Wigan are all shut.

Police forces across the region have been responding to incidents and ask people to be mindful.

In Greater Manchester, the A571 Billinge Road is impassable both ways due to snow from Holmes House Avenue to Enfield Street.

The Albion Way road is now blocked after a vehicle crash, in Ashton.

In Lancashire, there has been an accident on Elton Road near Oswaldtwistle. This road is now closed as well as Grane Road.

There’s slow traffic and a lane closed due to an accident on A59 Golden Way, in Penwortham.

In Merseyside police are advising drivers to avoid the junction of Everton Valley and St Domingo Road, because of snowy conditions.

Meanwhile, the junction between Mount Vernon and Low Hill is shut because of snow and ice.

The A552 Kings square Eastbound is closed due to weather conditions from A5227 Borough Road to A41 Chester Street.

The M57 Southbound exit slip road is blocked, there’s queueing traffic following an accident at J4 A580 Moorgate Road.

A yellow weather warning is currently in place across the North West until Thursday with more snow and ice expected, according to the Met Office.
