Supermarket workers have been on the frontline of the coronavirus pandemic, having to work in demanding conditions, and often without the praise they deserve. To show their gratitude, Aldi is giving all of its staff a 10% bonus for their incredibly hard work. According to the budget supermarket, the money is being paid out to recognise how tirelessly employees have been working, as they deal with busy stores and panic-buyers.

This bonus will be backdated to March 9th, going off all hours that staff have worked since then
The supermarket wrote on its website: “Aldi has today announced enhanced pay for its amazing colleagues, who have been working tirelessly throughout this extremely busy time. Store and distribution colleagues will receive a 10% bonus on hours worked, effective from 9th March 2020.”
It also announced dedicated shopping times for Emergency Workers, writing: “Aldi will open between 9.30am-10.00am on Sundays* solely for key workers in the NHS, Police and Fire Service. Eligible customers will be able to take priority at checkouts when they open at 10am. Entry to Aldi stores between 9.30am – 10.00am* will be with relevant ID only.” This comes as Tesco also gave its workers a 10% bonus, to recognise the ‘extraordinary’ effort its staff have made over the past few weeks.

Employees who work on shop floors, warehouses, in customer service, as well as management will receive the bonus, for all their hard work over the past few weeks.
Jason Tarry, Tesco’s UK and ROI CEO, said: “It’s been an extraordinary couple of weeks and despite the enormous challenges, it’s been incredible to see how colleagues have stepped up and responded, doing an outstanding job during this uncertain and difficult time.
“This pay bonus is just one way we are saying thank you to our colleagues and recognising that they are on the front line, helping to feed the nation.”
