Harry Potter actor Robbie Coltrane has died at the age of seventy-two.

The Scottish actor, best known for playing Hagrid in the movie franchise, passed away today (Friday October 14th), his agent Belinda Wright confirmed this evening.

An official statement reads: “He will probably be best remembered for decades to come as Hagrid in the Harry Potter films, a role which brought joy to children and adults alike all over the world, prompting a stream of fan letters every week for over twenty years.”

Wright described him as a ‘wonderful actor’ and ‘forensically intelligent’, adding that he is survived by his sister Annie Rae, his children Spencer and Alice and their mother Rhona Gemmell.

Alongside his role in Harry Potter, Coltrane – real name Anthony Robert McMillan – also starred in the TV series Cracker, and had roles in two James Bond films.

Coltrane was made an OBE in the 2006 New Year’s honours list for his services to drama, and was later awarded the Bafta Scotland Award for outstanding contribution to film in 2011.

While a cause of death is yet to be confirmed, his agent said Coltrane’s family thanked the team at Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert for their care.
