Wetherspoons set to close 16 pubs across the country

Wetherspoons has released a list of 16 pubs and bars across the country they plan on closing and putting up for sale. 

A statement from the pub chain, released on Wednesday, announced that it would be closing the doors of 16 pubs and bars from across the UK.

The closures will affect pubs in various regions up and down the country including the North West, South West, Yorkshire and the Humber, and the Midlands.

Until the pubs are sold they will be trading as normal, but once sold they will likely be rebranded with a new name, menu and prices, according to reports. 

Wetherspoons hasn’t announced why they have chosen these particular 16 outlets yet, or provided information on any potential buyers.

The Queens Head in Newport is one up for sale and a Wetherspoons spokesperson, Eddie Gershon, said about the closure: “We totally understand that our loyal customers and staff will be disappointed with this decision. However, Wetherspoon, does on occasion, put some of its pubs up for sale.

“It is a commercial decision taken by the company after long consideration. The pub will continue to trade as normal until a buyer is found.

“We have told our staff that if the pub is sold and they do not transfer to the purchaser, then we would look to redeploy our employees at other Wetherspoon pubs in the region.”

The news comes after Wetherspoons revealed a plan to reopen 875 pubs and will be swinging open their doors on July 4th, although they will look a lot different.
