In news that may not surprise anyone, three fish and chip shops in Greater Manchester have been hailed as some of the best in the country.

Fish and chip experts Fry Magazine have compiled together their definitive list of the UK’s top fifty chippies after months of painstaking research – we’re talking taste-testers sampling countless portions of fish and chips from over 10,000 chippies across the country, kind of research.

It’s a tough job, but someone has to do it.

The ‘mystery judges’ rated the chippies on their cleanliness, staff knowledge and professionalism, social media presence and, of course, that all important food score.

Each shop was then given a score out of 100, and to make the top fifty list, they needed to score a massive ninety-six.

And lo and behold, three of Greater Manchester’s finest chip shops made the list, with the experts deeming their food as some of the best in the whole country.

The Fish at Goose Green in Wigan, The Little Chippy in Tyldesley, and Chips @ No.8 in Prestwich all made the list for the second year in a row.

The team at Fish at Goose Green took to social media to share their delight with their inclusion in the prestigious list, writing: “We are extremely proud of our staff and are thankful for the continued support from all of our customers.

“The last two years have been tough for everyone and dreadful things are still taking place and this has been some lovely news for the team. I think there’s only one thing left to say… Who’s up for a Chippy tea?”

The Little Chippy were also thrilled with their achievement, with them writing on Facebook: “We are honoured to have made the top 50 again this year. A massive thank you to all our amazing staff and the continued support of all our customers who push us to be the best we can be.”

And barely able to contain their excitement, the owners of Chips@No.8 wrote: “Wow! What a day! We’ve just found out that out of over 10,500 fish and chip shops, our little chippy down a side street in P-Town has made @frymagazine Top 50 fish and chip takeaways in the country for the 2nd year running!!!

“Thank you to everyone for all your support and a massive thank you to the whole team here…. you are all awesome.”

Reece Head, the competition organiser over at Fry Magazine, said: “We’re so pleased to announce this year’s winners. The awards recognise and celebrate the hard work, passion and dedication that these operators put into running their businesses. It’s been a tough couple of years for the industry, in particular for restaurants that have had to deal with closures.

“But operators continued to adapt, motivate their workforce and invest in new equipment and systems that have seen them come out the other side stronger and in a better position.

“Fish and chip takeaways have really had to up their game over the past year in order to handle the growing number of click and collect and delivery orders generated as a result of Covid and integrate these new ways of working with their walk-in customers.

“Our 50 Best Takeaway and 10 Best Restaurant winners really do represent the best in the business and they continue to showcase fish and chips as a high quality, value for money meal.”
