A new ‘Neverspoons’ app has been created to encourage people to drink at independent pubs instead of Wetherspoons.

The app has been set up as part of the boycott Wetherspoons campaign that launched on social media after the owners received backlash for refusing to pay their suppliers in lockdown.

The Neverspoons app includes a map of alternative pubs in the surrounding area of Spoons establishments, where you can get a pint at instead.

The app uses green pins for recommended pubs and red pins for Wetherspoons, so you can see just how close the alternatives are.

The app also lets users generate a list of independent bars in the surrounding area of their local Spoons, which is accompanied by distance and even directions to make this super easy.

Neverspoons founder Shane Jones said: “Far too many traditional pubs closed down after the previous recession and it was pretty sad to see. Post lockdown could see us heading back that way.

“There are too many of these former pubs in amazing buildings, now derelict, that used to be the central hub for a lot of communities.

“If you can put some money in the till of a smaller independent pub through the use of this app, then it’s done the job I intended it to.”

The app currently only features alternative independent bars and pubs surrounding a selected few Wetherspoons, but you can send in recommendations via this form here.

The app is still in early developments, and a lot of people are asking for a feature such as a radius filter to get an idea of how far away they are, or a ‘use my location’ feature to be able to change your location.

Most people are buzzing with the app saying its ‘easy to use’, and ‘lets you find pubs by cheapest prices making it the easiest way to wean people of spoons’.
