In the battle for a cheap dinner at work, nothing comes close to a classic meal deal in terms of value for money.

Well, Asda has just thrown its hat into the meal deal ring, offering a different version of the classic three items for a fixed price setup.

The supermarket previously didn’t offer a meal deal as it claimed its prices were already low enough.

Asda’s take on a meal deal is a bit different, essentially you can choose from between the 300 items in the Food to Go range, with the cheapest item coming free.

This means its meal deal starts at just £1.60, which is nearly half the price of Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury’s offerr -they all offer a drink, main item and snack for £3.

Meanwhile Asda is doing three for the price of two, meaning you’ll save between 38p and £4 per meal deal – the cheapest option is either the egg and cress, ham, or cheese and onion sandwiches (£1), an own brand mineral water bottle (38p) and packet of Walkers Baked crisps (60p), which will set you back £1.60 with the water coming free.

And it’s more flexible, meaning you don’t have to buy a sandwich, snack and drink, you could drop the drink and get two snacks, for example.

However, it can come in as more expensive than other supermarkets’ offers, like if you got the £2 ham and cheese sandwich, a can of Red Bull for £1.69 and a pack of crisps for 80p it would cost you £3.69.

So if – like most of us – your greatest meal deal pleasure comes from buying the most expensive things on offer and feeling like a king as it only comes to £3, you’re best off sticking with Tesco, Morrisons or Sainsbury’s.

But if it’s just a bargain you’re after, then Asda’s deal is already available in-store and online.
