Did you even have a childhood if you didn’t tuck into a square pizza and oven chips at least once a week?
Us Brits have a quirky old cuisine. Why is our National Dish not a fish finger butty or a bean toastie? That’s what we really know how to do best after all.
There are a few things that mould us as kids, like knowing who said BOG OFF, that a blue paper towel can fix anything, the Biff, Chip and Kipper books, as well as that iconic school sponge cake.
But these iconic British meals are the real deal and you’re about to be very hungry…
Square Pizza and Chips
What an absolute iconic dish to start off with. The addition of beans just makes this a Michelin star worthy meal.
Fish Finger Butty
OH WOW. This has just been taken to the absolute next level with a Potato Waffle (another staple in the diet of a British kid).
Turkey Twizzlers and Potato Smilies
This Canadian guys knows exactly what’s up. Think he’s got confused about what baked beans on toast is though. Long live potato smilies!!
Angel Delight
You can almost taste how sweet this is just from the picture.
Rice Pudding
Rice Pudding was an absolutely necessity in my house. Doesn’t matter how filling Rice Pudding is, you always had room for the gloopy, creamy deliciousness even if you were stuffed.
Toastie
Of course a classic flavour combination is ham and cheese but personally, I find Heinz Beans and Sausage absolutely incredible.
Fruit Crumble and Custard from a carton
This is a ‘dessert at your nans’ classic. Nothing better than a drizzle of jam all over the top too.
Crisp Butty
The almighty duo of Walkers and Warburtons. Somethings were just meant to go together. Walkers are the only crisps that belong between two slices of bread. Corn crisps are an absolute no-go as are anything that is slightly puffed like Wotsits and Monster Munch, great crisps but never for a butty.
Pie, Chips & Gravy
Last, but certainly not least is the pie, chips and gravy combo. This absolutely needs lashings of gravy and plenty of salt. (Disclaimer: this isn’t specifically a childhood meal, but every food-based list needs pie, chips and gravy on it).
I told you you’d be hungry by the end of this post.
